Owen Sound’s Sharktank won the American Poolplayers Association 8-Ball World Pool Championship at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino on Sunday.
The win netted the team a first-place cash prize of $25,000 (U.S.).
Sharktank, members of the Canadian Pool League, gained eligibility for the championship by participating in weekly league play and placing at the top of their division during the fall, summer and spring sessions. They then qualified at their Local Team Championship to become part of a 700-plus-team field at the 8-Ball World Championship.
Harvey’s Billiards in Owen Sound hosts Sharktank’s weekly league play, the team members include: Lee Jacques, Lee Thomas (LT) Jacques, Keshia Jacques, Colleen Craig, Jason Purves-Meyer, Lachlan Macarthur, Andrew Graham, Ty King.
The APA is recognized as the world’s largest pool league with a membership of nearly 250,000 players. The APA World Pool Championships was recognized in 2010 as the world’s largest pool tournament.
Owen Sound’s Sharktank beat a field of 713 teams from the United States, Canada and Japan to be crowned champions.
